People with aphasia --trouble expressing words -- often have a lot of trouble with telephones. I know I do. I feel like I have to preplan everything I am going to say, to have words ready and that takes a huge amount of energy.
I want to tell you that there is something different available that is a whole lot better than a telephone!!!
Internet video-calling face-to-face is the best speech therapy!
It is Star-Trek time. A person with aphasic can see and communicate more easily to friends, anywhere, on a computer screen. The challenge of the telephone is gone. A person can see friends in living breathing color and it is so much easier to express, with gestures, words or smiles visible. Nothing to imagine anything, like on a telephone. It is so much easier to take time to convey what you want to!
To have social time right in your own home with free video-calling through your computer is great, easy speech therapy.
All you need with your computer is a webcam camera. Most newish computers have the webcam already, but if not a webcam is easy to attach and inexpensive.
Get ready. And get psyched to get connected with all your friends through video-calling! And get them connected with you! You will have a happy time together!
The easiest way is to Goggle Skype and then link there to the Download that is right for your computer: Mac or Windows. After downloading the Skype Wizard will help you install it and will ask you to make a skype calling name. That's it!
Then you call someone -- like me -- to try it out, you will learn to press the little video camera button at the bottom your Skype screen and they -- or me -- can see you too.
Get your friends to download Skype, and experiment with free national video-calling with them.
Internet Video-calling is vastly easier for an aphasic than a telephone! The visual makes communication MUCH easier.
